Is cortical criticality unique?

چکیده
There are indications that for optimizing neural computation, neu-ral networks-including the brain-operate at criticality. Previous approaches have, however, used diverse fingerprints of criticality, leaving open the question whether they refer to a unique critical point or whether there could be several. Using a recurrent spiking neural network as the model, we demonstrate that avalanche criticality does not necessarily lie at the dynamical edge-of-chaos and that therefore, the different fingerprints indicate distinct phenomena with an as yet unclarified relationship.

Maximizing Sensory Dynamic Range by Tuning the Cortical State to Criticality
Modulation of interactions among neurons can manifest as dramatic changes in the state of population dynamics in cerebral cortex. How such transitions in cortical state impact the information processing performed by cortical circuits is not clear. Here we performed experiments and computational modeling to determine how somatosensory dynamic range depends on cortical state. We used microelectro...
متن کاملSpontaneous cortical activity is transiently poised close to criticality
Brain activity displays a large repertoire of dynamics across the sleep-wake cycle and even during anesthesia. It was suggested that criticality could serve as a unifying principle underlying the diversity of dynamics. This view has been supported by the observation of spontaneous bursts of cortical activity with scale-invariant sizes and durations, known as neuronal avalanches, in recordings o...
متن کاملMinimal model of plasma membrane heterogeneity requires coupling cortical actin to criticality.
We present a minimal model of plasma membrane heterogeneity that combines criticality with connectivity to cortical cytoskeleton. The development of this model was motivated by recent observations of micron-sized critical fluctuations in plasma membrane vesicles that are detached from their cortical cytoskeleton. We incorporate criticality using a conserved order parameter Ising model coupled t...

Thermodynamic criticality describes emergent phenomena in a wide variety of complex systems. In the mammalian cortex, one type of complex dynamics that spontaneously emerges from neuronal interactions has been characterized as neuronal avalanches. Several aspects of neuronal avalanches such as their size and life time distributions are described by power laws with unique exponents, indicating a...
متن کاملThe criticality hypothesis: how local cortical networks might optimize information processing.
Early theoretical and simulation work independently undertaken by Packard, Langton and Kauffman suggested that adaptability and computational power would be optimized in systems at the 'edge of chaos', at a critical point in a phase transition between total randomness and boring order. This provocative hypothesis has received much attention, but biological experiments supporting it have been re...
